This week i have been participating in a weeks worth of work experience with independant designer Petra Boase. I have had such a fun, insightful and productive week. For a start i've been driving an hour there and back every day - an achievment in itself as it's the furthest i've been on my own. This may seem irrelevant but to me this was a hurdle i had to overcome, and by the end of the week was embracing my long drives to and from Petras with the company of the radio!
I feel as if i have really benefited in taking part in such an opportunity as i have had a real insight into the working industry, Petra has a small group of people she works with to keep on top of the hefty workload she has,and it's a lovely little 'community' she has there, they are/were all extremely helpful and friendly. They all come from artistic backgrounds, so they can feed of one another for ideas and inspiration and have something generally in common.
I got a few names that she has thought i would benefit from looking at after looking at my work, so i got some great useful feedback on my work aswell! Which is always nice coming from a designer! I have taken on board with what she has said so i can take and adapt and learn from them. I learnt so much about the pros and cons about running a business, and factors that i would have never thought about . There are so many things to consider when designing as production and cost have such a major impact on businesses.
Japanese paper balloons that i gave my little sister Millie but i think everyone wants them! Alisha is having them for her birthday, Harvey wants the elephant and Bethany wants the jellyfish!
These are medium sized bunting balls 2D. These are great as they are so compact and little, but when opened andstuck togetherbecome a 3D creation. I got a lot of multi colours to create accent and contrasting colours in my room. As you can see all of her products are branded.
3D.
All of the colours together.I think they all work together very well!
Pictured in a more vibrant setting on our newly grown grass!
Hung up on a piece of multi-coloured string in keeping with the bunting balls.
Petra Boase studio is located in Narborough and the surrounding fields that her studio overlooks are very pretty, even if it's out in the countryside. It is in a very small little town with not alot in, which makes a change to the hectic lifestyle of London based designers. Petra has good links with London where she sells alot of her product in stores such as Libertys and Designers Guild. She is a fine example of that you don't have to be in London to have a successful career, which is a optimistic thought as i would like to live either by the coast or in the countryside not in a busy city centre as i don't see it as a place of calm and motivation,i prefer the home lifestyle where you can have a day out in the city but return home to an open fire, or a breath of fresh air by the sea! Also there is so much more outdoors fun to have when you're not surrounded by houses, but by local people you have become to know. Alot of my work is based on people i know in particular my family,to give it a personal and intimate touch to it!
I won't disclose any off the information i learnt from Petra as it's personal information that i feel priveleged to have known it, but i fully appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into making a successful business. I have written down everything so that i have them future reference.
She also gave me one of her mugs, she was very generous with what she gave me. I now have a quirky mug for my cups of tea!
